Resilience and Renewal is a new series of mixed media mono print paintings which explore the horizon as a metaphor for how midlife women face the next chapter in their lives.

When the sun shines the colours of spring burst everywhere.
My challenge over the last week or so has been working in a format that is outside my comfort zone - square 50x50cm.
If you’ve been following me for a while now (thank you!) and you’ll know that my go to format is long landscape so this is me forcing a challenge.
I now love challenge it really excites the risk that I know leads to something new.
Experience of midlife has shown me that if I just stand still I may feel safe but I stagnate so I mush push myself beyond what I know and can see to find excitement and possibilities.
These paintings are beginning to show me possibilities so more layers on their way!!

Spring has definitely arrived here in the UK !!!!!
The studio has had its spring clean and I am so energised to be working on the new 50x50cm format for a new series of paintings.
I thought that I would just show you around and give you a little insight into so@e of the media I use regularly. Specifically for the early layers of my skies I use:-

How do you make yourself take action?
Just get up and do it…Sounds so simple doesn’t it but it’s not!
By midlife most of us will have a built in fear-of making wrong choices or starting something we can’t finish or wasting the time we have left.
I am classically all of the above 👆 BUT I find the resilience that I have built up over a life time of being knocked back, putting myself last, never giving myself enough time that drives me to make the most of this next chapter of my life.
I know that the Chiltern Hills, the cloudscapes and the space where they both meet in my paintings have given me belief that I can do and be more.

Pushing myself out of my comfort zone this week.
I am working in a different format from my usual horizontal linear space to a 50x50 square format .
I have no idea how this will feel, I wanted a challenge and I know that risk is both scary and exciting.
I know now that pushing myself out of my comfort zone is rarely as awful as it first appears.
Midlife has taught me this so I now do it anyway 🙂
Trust yourself to give something new a go - take a hold of what scares you and just go for it!

Not taking myself too seriously today.
After a busy morning I just needed to step out and ‘play’ today. So I took a few old canvas boards and without any plan or intention just let myself play around - wow that feels better!
It just doesn’t have to be so darn serious all the time does it?

My journey…so far…the next chapter awaits

Happy Saturday everyone 😀 but I totally get that this weekend you may be feeling less than great, stuck in your routine, confused about your next steps and just not able to be you.
Take some time, even just five minutes, outside of everyone else’s needs and expectations of you today. Go for a walk, or just shut the front door and stand outside for five minutes and look up, look out, look further. Then close your eyes and allow yourself to imagine a future self, beyond the horizon - dream a little - it’s free and powerful.

Two years ago I took a step towards my future self
Two years ago I put myself first

I am still on my journey to my dream but I took the hardest step… I took time for me. You can too - even five minutes is powerful

I was stuck in my midlife mindset till I made this one shift and things began to change.
I stopped saying that everything was FINE when clearly it wasn’t.
👉I said it how it was
👉I stopped trying to convince myself it was enough to be just getting by
👉I said no to things that didn’t serve ME
…and I gave myself time with my passion, my future self and for me that was my painting.
You, me and all the midlife women that we know is who I paint for - we are not always fine !

Breaking free from expectations
As children we ran in long grass excited by the wind, the sky and just the idea of fun but society expects us in midlife to go quietly, to make no fuss, to not ask questions and to be happy with our ‘lot’.
What if instead
👉we asked ourselves what we wanted from today
👉we said no to something we didn’t want to do
👉we set aside time for just ourselves
👉we allowed ourselves to dream of a different future
👉we noted our emotional value

Maybe, just maybe, we could heads towards a new future, one which we dream of for ourselves where we can feel fulfilled, excited and free to run in long grass!

We are more than the sum of our past roles - parent, carer, career…
In midlife we can choose another chapter to add to ourselves.
I paint the horizon because it symbolises the future - focusing on looking forward.
We are not constrained by lies behind us we can move forward with the basic human curiosity of wanted to see further.
I want to make art to share and inspire women to acknowledge and believe that in midlife we have so much more ahead of us and I want the horizons I paint to be our metaphor for possibility.
Look up and out - the horizon is waiting.

What’s calling you to your next chapter?
I loved being a teacher, and for years, it felt like exactly where I was meant to be. I found joy in inspiring young people and shaping their futures.
But I started to realize that the moments I felt most creatively alive weren’t in the classroom—they were out walking, looking toward the horizon, searching for what lay beyond. That quiet pull toward something new became impossible to ignore.
Therefore, I took the leap. I left the career I loved to pursue the dream that had been waiting for me all along. It was definitely scary, uncertain, and completely life-changing. And now, every day in my studio feels like a step toward the horizon I once only dreamed of reaching.

Your future self lies just beyond the horizon
I paint horizons because they symbolize possibility and the beauty of what’s yet to come. For midlife women, this phase isn’t an end—it’s a shift toward something new.
But too often, we’re told that midlife is about decline, about settling for less, about fading into the background. Society whispers that our best years are behind us.
Therefore I paint horizons to remind women that their next chapter is waiting just beyond the edge of what they can see.

I believe that I am not stuck…and like the water in this beautiful stream I walked by my life will eddy and flow but even though I can sometimes feel swept along by the needs of others and the difficulties of simple everyday life, I can choose to be as strong as the branch who just dips gently into the water but is not driven forward by it. I know therefore that I can stay strong and hold true to my own journey and at my own pace …with confidence.
The key for me is knowing that I can bend without breaking my self worth.

🙌 when two artists get together there will be ink and coffee - hopefully not in the same cup ☕️ but it’s always a close run thing!
Spending a grey January day with the fabulously talented @mandyann.s.w chatting, drinking coffee whilst we mono and tetra pac print in the kitchen (the studio is too small and cold for the amount of mess we both create 😁 )

🎨I am both drawn and pulled to see the light and connections at the far edge of our visual reach - the liminal space where the land and sky meet. I think it’s human curiosity about ‘what lies beyond’ which is a part of us all.
The landscape and my emotional responses to its light, weather, colours and forms is integral to what I paint and create.
🎨 I start each studio session working either into a small handmade concertina sketchbook or developing one of my many A5 @seawhiteofbrighton double sided sketchbooks.
These sketchbooks both focus my attention and loosen the movement of paint and drawing across the page.
🎨 Only when I am calm and relaxed do I move onto the easel to whatever I am working on.
